I was asked by a few of my students how to correctly format their EXIT project paper for my assignment. I told them I would do a screencast and publish it to youtube. My students were shocked that I was able to do that so I decided to post it to my webpage for their class.

New Video Ideas
Due to time constraints, I have thought about narrowing down my ideas to one single cause for war in America (how we got involved). I am entitling it The Cycle of Imperialism and the United States. I will quickly overview how the United States was a colony and how George Washington warned us not to get involved in foreign affairs. I will then cut to a short overview of how we conquered the Native Americans and ultimately wanted to play with the big countries (Britain, France, Spain). This will lead the students to an understanding of how we got involved in wars like Iraq, Vietnam, Korea, and so on.
My intent will be to allow students to understand the cycle that we were forced into without regard for our forefather's advice.

Tools for my Video
I will be using my digital camera that is equipped with a video camera until I receive my video camera that I ordered this past weekend. I will also be using windows movie maker and perhaps Adobe Premiere. I will also need a tripod in order to shoot the videos with accuracy. Overall I am at a point where I may rethink my ideas due to time constraints and availability of creative commons images. I will be making my final decision by Tuesday evening in an effort to focus my energy on creating my video Tuesday and Wednesday.

My Video Outline for Student-Audience
My Video will be a Review of 8th Grade Social Studies
After watching a really boring movie from 1865-1917 US History with my students, I was tempted to change the idea that not all educational movies have to be boring. I try every day to make my classes as interesting as possible, but since it is history, it is important to try and engage my students any way possible.
My Outline
I will open up with images of Native Americans hunting buffalo, Eskimos making igloos, and Hawaiian Natives just enjoying their land.
I will then write the word in large letters IMPERIALISM
In the next segment, I will show images of the US railroad employees killing the buffalo for fun showing how the USA's main goal was to eliminate the Indians from the West since there was money to be made.
I will then describe how the Dawes Act was a Congressional Act that forced Native Americans off their own land to live on Reservations and describe how the idea was that they can have their own land in a reserved area specifically for them.
I will show that since the United States has been an imperialistic nation, how they changed the lives of the Native Americans for ever.
I will then move to how we took the land of Alaska along with the help of Sen. William Seward from the Russians for an unfair profit by Americans. This would lead us to another war--- the Cold War in the late 1950s-1980s. I will show how we also wiped the Eskimos off their own land simply because we wanted the oil and the resources from the area.
I will finally explain how the United States took the land from the Kingdom of Hawaii. Using Dole and the Sugar companies, we systematically wiped out the natives from Hawaii and when the King died and the Queen took over, we easily took control and annexed (took over) Hawaii.
This video will be only part of the video. However, this would show how the United States eventually got involved in World War I. I think this would be interesting for students to see what really happened in this type of format.
Let me know what you think. I will definitely be adding to the ideas as they are offered to me!

Comments on Next Vista Videos

I found this video in the lightbulbs section of the website. I was attracted to it since I too consider myself a graphic designer. I wanted to see what this person planned on focusing on. I was a little disappointed at the lack of appropriate audio and visuals. It was hard to hear the man speak at times since he was in his classroom and not on a microphone, which increased the echo. Overall however, I think that he did a good job, but I think that if he were to submit a new video in the future, that he would take that into consideration.

I also found this video on the lightbulbs section of the website. I am also an EMT and I was curious to see what this person decided to talk about. I know that there are some privacy issues with showing actual patients, but I think that if he took us on a ride along describing situations versus talking in front of the non-moving apparatus, that would have been more effective. He could have also shown the tools used on a daily basis as an EMT. Overall, it was informative, but I would hope in the future to see more action for an exciting job description.

I found this video in the service section. I was curious to see what Project Amigo was all about. I found it very informative and it really sounds like a worthy cause for Next Vista to sponsor. I hope that one day I can get my students involved in a program like Project Amigo for NYC students. Some of their own families are in situations as were described. The video incorporated music, videos, and still pictures with nice transitions. However, the only critique I have is that the pictures are out of focus at times. Other than that, it was well done!
